Accessing the Library

When is the main library opened?
Please refer to the Library Hours. Hours for the winter / summer vacation will be announced separately. Any particular announcement will be posted on the notice board and library website.

Where are the main library and the medical library?
The main library is located in the Cheng-Kung campus, and it is close to the gate beside Hsiao-Tung Road.
The medical library is located opposite the main library, across Hsiao-Tung Road. It occupies the first floor of the medical college that is located in the Chien-Kuo campus.Please refer to Location.

Can new graduate students apply for a library card before they set a student ID?
New graduate students are welcome to apply for a temporary library card at the Circulation Desk. The temporary library card will be replaced when the student ID is ready to be used.

Can the general public access the library and bring personal belongings into the library?
The general public at or over the age of16 can obtain a valid ID with photo to exchange a temporary visitor card to enter the library. The general public is not allowed to bring in any books except for blank papers (A4 size, not more than 10 pages), bags smaller than B5 size, and laptop.

How can I get my ID card back if I lose my temporary visitor card?
If the temporary visitor card is missing, the user will be charged a NT$ 200 processing-fee to get back the ID card
- How to apply an alumnus library card?

Can I use the mobile phone in the library?
Readers can only use the mobile phone in the copy room of each floor.

Can the readers bring food or beverage into the library?
No food or beverage is allowed in the library except for water.

Does the library offer library tour, and does visitor need permission to take photos during the tour?
The library offers library tours. The tour should be booked in advance, and the reservation can be made a week before the visiting date by e-mail, telephone (campus extantion 65766), or in person.
Visitors need library permission beforehand to take photos during the tour. However, please beware of the portrait right.Please refer to Library Tour.

Borrowing and Returning Materials

What kind of material can be borrowed?
Most of the library materials which can be borrowed are books; other collections are for library use only (periodicals, multimedia collections, thesis, technical reports, microform, etc.).

How to borrow materials?

How to renew borrowed material?
Materials can be renewed under 'no reservation' and 'no overdue' conditions. The new due date will be 30 days after the renewal date, and each material can be renewed a maximum of 360 days.

Where to return the checked-out materials?
Please bring back the checked-out material to the Circulation Desk during library opening hours. If the library is closed, users are advised to drop their books in the “Book Drop” box which is located at the west side of the building.

Can general public borrow the book?
The general public, unless applied a one-year library card, cannot check out library materials.

Can user borrow or return materials with other’s ID?
It is prohibited to use other's ID card for checking out materials. User’s ID is not needed for returning.

What does user have to do if he or she lost the material?
If library materials are lost or damaged, please contact Circulation Desk as soon as possible to prevent the overdue fine.

Can reader check out thesis and dissertations?
Thesis/dissertation is for library use only.

How to borrow the course reserve books?
Please bring your campus ID and come to the Circulation Desk for check out course reserve books. Course reserve books can only be borrowed by NCKU faculty and students.

What will happen if the fine is not paid?
Borrowers who fail to return materials within the loan periods shall be charged overdue fines, and will be suspended your library privileges.

How to pay my library overdue fines?
You can pay your fines via the following ways:
- Pay in person:
If you or your deputy want to pay your fines in person, just go to the 1F Service Desk of the Main Library or the Kun-Yen Medical Library and you can only pay by cash. - Pay via kiosk:
Current NCKU faculty, staff, and students can pay overdue fines using the Campus Payment Kiosks. Payment can be made through cash, EasyCard, iPass, or LINE pay. Visit your nearest kiosk location:http://reg.acad.ncku.edu.tw/var/file/41/1041/img/2520/coin_service.pdf - Pay online:
Please contact the Library staff from the Collection Management and Circulation Services Division first (call 062757575#65760 or email to em65760@email.ncku.edu.tw).
After the staff uploads the payment information, you can log in to the "Online Payment Platform" to make your payment. (Default account: your personal identification number /password: last 4 digits of your identification number).
Payment can be made through credit card, LINE pay, ATM (charge a handling fee of NT$ 10), over the counter of Bank of Taiwan (charge a handling fee of NT$ 10), or convenience store (charge a handling fee of NT$ 10).

Where can I look for information about the materials’ location in the library?
You can obtain a library floor plan at the Reference Desk (floor 1) or you can serve our website for allocations of various materials.

What should I do if the library does not have the collection which I needed?
If the material is not available in the library collection, you can check with the Interlibrary Loan Service. With the ILL service, you can access and borrow materials from other member libraries. For more details, please call the ILL Unit at extension 65741 or the Circulation Desk at extension 65760.

Where can I find the information of the new arrivals?
Please check the "New Arrivals" page that is available on the Library Catalog.

How to reserve a group study room?
Only NCKU faculty, staff and students are available to use group study room.

How to reserve a study carrel?
Reservations shall only be made by person or by phone (campus extension 65760/65764) one day ahead.

Media Services

I am not affiliated with NCKU. Can I use the facilities in the Media Center?
The Media Center provides fee-based service to the general public.

Can patrons check out audio-visual materials?
Audio-visual materials with public performance rights: NCKU faculty, for lecturing purposes, may check out up to three items for seven days, and may renew them once as well as make reservations.
Audio-visual materials without public performance rights: NCKU faculty, staff and students may check out up to three items for seven days.

What kind of collections can be found in the Media Center?
Media Center contains videocassettes, Digital videodiscs, laser disc collections, audiocassettes, audio compact -discs, slide collections, monographs,new acquisitions and course-reserved materials.

Does Media Center provide replicate service for the user?
The Media Center does not provide material replicate service due to the intellectual property rights, and user is prohibited to bring in personal device for replicating audio/visual material.

Does user allow bringing personal audio/visual material to the Media Center?
Most of the audio/visual materials are recorded with copyright for personal use only, for it is not advised to play any personal audio/visual material in the media center or public place.

How to reserve the group viewing room and auditorium?
There are different rules and regulations for reservation:
- Lecturers or advisor can reserve the auditorium for using the media materials to supplement the course instruction. Moreover, the audience group has to be 10 to 70 people.
- Group viewing rooms can be reserved for movie showing, and the audience group has to be 3 to 15 people. Group viewing rooms can be booked on spot or made a reservation.

How to login to Express Document Delivery Service(via RapidILL)?
Please select「RapidILL」on the Library homepage, then log in with your faculty/student/staff ID or Alumni Library Card Number and Password. No additional registration is needed.

How to cancel RapidILL requests?
Cancel of requests are subjected to the policy of libraries. To cancel requests, please call library staffs to help you.

What do I do if I forgot my NDDS password?
Please link to the NDDS (Nationwide Document Delivery Service), then click the check password. Enter your ID number then submit. The System will e-mail you the password.

What is the fastest and most economical way to request materials from other libraries?
- First, checking the NCKU Library Catalog and E-Resource to make sure that the required item is not available within the Library.
- Checking the Union Catalogs or other libraries’ catalogs in accordance with the types of materials (books or periodicals)and select the libraries which held the required item.
- Fill in as many lending libraries as possible. System will forward your request to next appointed library automatically if the first library fails to fill the request.
- NCKU has teamed up with the NSYSU, CCU, NCHU, KMU, NCCU and NYCU to provide express service for patrons. NT$3 per page is charged for photocopies and NT$100/book(plus NT$70 postage)for book borrowing without any service charge.

How do I choose between RapidILL and NDDS?
For photocopies of materials written in western language , request through RapidILL is preferable. For photocopies of materials written in other language or for borrowing a book, please send requests through NDDS.

What is RapidILL?
RAPIDILL, developed by the Morgan Library of the Colorado State University, is an organization of libraries mainly from the universities in the United States dedicated to fast and cost-effective resource sharing. Request for copies of materials submitted through RapidILL will be delivered faster, often within 24 hours.

What is NDDS?
NDDS(Nationwide Document Delivery Service)is a system developed locally to facilitate resource sharing among libraries in Taiwan. They are fee bases services, and charges vary from library to library. First time users must register to login.

What are Union Catalogs?
Union catalogs are databases combining at least two library catalogs, whereby patrons can search collections from multiple libraries and borrow books or receive photocopies of articles through ILL.
Some union catalogs are not complete, however, because the data is enormous and difficult to maintain. Therefore, it is suggested that patrons search more catalogs lest the required materials cannot be found.【List of Union Catalogs】:
