(Disaster)

Disaster in Speculative Fiction (science fiction, fantasy and horror)
Speculative fictions allow the imagination of alternative histories and possibilities, extending contemporary hopes and fears for apocalyptic change beyond what appear to be existing realities.

Historic Disasters
How specific “natural” or man-made disasters have been experienced, coped with, and remembered, becoming models for understanding, averting, and dreading future catastrophes.

War
Humans so far have imagined warfare as the peak of their deliberate violence and intentional destruction of the lived environment, with nuclear war as its possible ultimate extension. On the other hand, human history also witnesses the role of conflict in the development of society and the development of the nation-state from time periods marked by warfare and violence.

Genocide
The experience and imagination of destruction visited on particular human communities, aimed at their biological extermination or cultural erasure.

Terrorism
Political violence usually defined as stateless, which may be seen as an existential threat to civilization. If the state form is taken for granted and valorized it, terrorism can be represented as its pure negation, while revolution can sometimes be valued as its re-founding.

The Native American Experience and the Imagination of Disaster
American communities had already experienced population collapses, cultural destructions, and reconstructions before European contact, and some featured narratives of repeated destruction and re-creation in their mythologies. Since contact they have lived constantly the intertwined experiences of genocide and ethnogenesis.

Disaster and South Asian Diaspora since Colonialism
Colonial oppression, partition of the Indian subcontinent, and postcolonial ethnic conflicts and civil war have induced the South Asian experience of displacement from their native land and their ensuing dispersal across the world.

(Disease)

Epidemic Disease
Disease experienced or imagined as threatening the survival of entire human populations, or that of their social organizations and cultures.

Late Antiquity, Medieval, and Renaissance Medicine and Disease
These texts consider the development of medicine in response to disease, the effects of the Black Death, and the beginnings of the scientific method.

Biopolitics
At fewer moments in human history are the human body and its physical conditions directly exposed to political consideration and technical management than when disasters (especially epidemic diseases) strike and render the living conditions precarious. Philosophical and theoretical discussions of the related issues proliferate along with the rising awareness of survival crisis in the modern age.

(Apocalyptic Imagination)

Millennialism & Messianism
End times seen more as promise than threat: the disruption of degraded secular existence by transcendent energy that promises redemption to whatever is worthy of redemption.

Ecological Catastrophe
The fear of ecological catastrophe’s potential threat to human cultural and biological survival becomes more prevalent as our capacity and apparent willingness to bring it about become more inescapable.

Aftermath: Survival, Wreckage and Ruins
The record, representation, and conception of what follows disaster—cleaning up, rebuilding, or accepting decay. Fascination with the sublimity of ruins, and disaster as tourist spectacle.
