For months the world watched as NATO planes tried to bring the forces of Slobodan Milosevic to heel and stop the flood of ethnic Albanians from Kosovo in the former Yugoslavia. As the conflict wore on, correspondent Harry Smith visited the refugee camps of Macedonia, interviewing the people who had been forced to leave their homes and lives behind. What emerges is a gripping, personal look at the cost of war. As Mr. Smith says, "We met people from all walks of life. Teachers, factory workers, doctors, engineers.Everyone we met told harrowing tales of abuse at the hands of the Serbs, tales of near starvation, of wandering the Kosovo countryside looking for safety.We even met a woman who, nine months pregnant, walked out of Kosovo with her three children only to give birth the day after she arrived in the camp. Kosovo is an autonomous province within the Serbian republic and this program reports on the resistance by ethnic Albanians against Serb occupation which could become other Bosnia. Segment 2: Takes viewers to Tajikistan in the former Soviet Union, where a virtually unreported civil war has taken an estimated 50,000 lives and has led to summary executions, disappearances, and ethnic strife.

“Prelude to Kosovo: War and Peace in Bosnia and Croatia” depicts the bitter civil war in the former Yugoslavia. Shot on location in Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia, the documentary combines graphic footage and interviews with religious and political figures.
The film addresses the ideology of "ethnic cleansing" and the massacres resulting from a nationalist quest for political, cultural and religious domination. The Serbian Orthodox, Bosnian Muslim and Croatian Catholic perspectives are all represented. The film features original Balkan music by Alexis Gavras, Vedran Smailovic and Vuk Kulenovic.
