Accessing the Library

1.

When is the main library opened?

Please refer to the Library hours. Hours for the winter / summer vacation will be announced during the term. Any particular announcement will be posted on the notice board and library website.¡iwww.lib.ncku.edu.tw¡j.

2.

Where are the main library and the medical library?

The main library is located in the Cheng-Kung campus, and it is close to the gate beside Hsiao-Tung Road. The medical library is located opposite the main library, across Hsiao-Tung Road. It occupies the first floor of the medical college that is located in the Chien-Kuo campus.

3.

Can new graduate students apply for a library card before they set a student ID?

New graduate students are welcome to apply for a temporary library card at the Circulation Desk. The temporary library card will be replaced when the student ID is ready to be used. Please refer to Library card.

4.

Can the general public access the library?

Members of the general public at or over the age 16 can obtain a temporary visitor card with a photo ID card to enter the library. The general public is not allowed to bring in any books except for personal notebooks. Please refer to Library card, Library behavior, and Locker service.

5.

How to access the study hall?

It is restricted to users that are campus members, alumni, and faculty/staff family members. Campus members should scan personal library cards to enter the study hall. Alumni and Faculty/Staff Family members should show personal library card to the staff to get the permission. Please refer to Library card, Library behavior, and Locker service.

6.

When is the study hall open?

The study hall is open from 7am to 11 pm, except during the midterm and final exam weeks. The study hall will be open 24 hours a day during the examination period.

7.

Can the general public access the study hall?

The study hall is restricted to users that are campus members, alumni, and faculty/staff family members. Please refer to Library card, Library behavior, and Locker service.

8.

How can I get my ID card back if I lose my visitor card?

If the visitor card is missing, the user will be charged a NT$ 200 processing-fee to get back the ID card.

9.

How to apply an alumnus library card?

Please refer to the Library card.

Borrowing and Returning Materials

1.

What kind of material can be borrowed?

 

Most of the library materials which can be borrowed are books; other collections are for library use only (periodicals, multimedia collections, thesis, technical reports, microform, etc.). For further information, please refer to the Borrowing and returning section.

How to borrow materials?

 

Please refer to Borrowing materials.

3.

How to renew borrowed material?

 

Please refer to Renewals or you can check the ¡¥View Your Record¡¦. Materials can be renewed under 'no reservation' and 'no overdue' conditions. The new due date will be 30 days after the renewal date, and each material can be renewed a maximum of 6 times.

4.

Where to return the checked-out materials?

 

Please refer to Returning materials. Normally, materials are brought back to the Circulation Desk, where the library staff checks in the materials. If the library is closed, users are advised to drop their books in the ¡§Book drop box.¡¨

5.

Can general public borrow the book?

 

The general public cannot check out library materials except for users who have a one-year library card. Please refer to Library card.

6.

Can user borrow or return materials with other¡¦s ID?

 

It is prohibited to use other's ID card for checking out materials, but it allows returning the material. Please refer to Library behavior.

7.

What does user have to do if he or she lost the material?

 

Please refer to Overdue, lost or damaged material. Library reminds you to return borrowed materials before the due day or try to do the renewal procedures in time. If library materials are lost or damaged, please contact Circulation Desk as soon as possible to prevent the overdue fine.

Using Library Facilities

1.

Where can I look for information about the materials¡¦ location in the library?

 

You can obtain a library floor plan at the Reference Desk (floor 1). The allocations of various materials are available on the floor plan.

2.

What should I do if I cannot find the materials I need in the library collection?

 

If the material is not available in the library collection, you can check with the Inter-Library Loan service. With the ILL service, you can access and borrow materials from other member libraries. For more details, please call the ILL Unit at extension 65741 or the Circulation Desk at extension 65760.

3.

Where can I find the information of the new arrivals?

 

Please check the ¡¥New Arrivals¡¦ Page that is available on the library catalog, http://webpac.lib.ncku.edu.tw.

4.

Does the library offer library tour?

 

The library offers various library tours. The tour should be booked in advance, and the reservation can be made a week before the visiting date by e-mail, telephone, or in person. For further information, please contact the Circulation and Public Service Department (extension¡G65760).

How to reserve a group study room?

Media Services

1.

I am not affiliated with NCKU.  Can I use the facilities in the Media Center?

 

The Media Center provides fee-based service to the general public.

2.

When is the Media Center opened?

 

The Media Center is open from 8¡G30 am to 9¡G30 pm everyday except on public holidays during the semester. The hours for the winter and summer vacation will be announced before the recess.

3.

Does user allow borrowing Media Center's collections?

 

General speaking, most of the Media Center's collections are not allow for checking out, unless it is for lecturing purpose. Lecturer can borrow three items at one time for 7 days, but those items are not renewable.

4.

What kind of collections can be found in the Media Center?

 

Media Center contains videocassettes, Digital videodiscs, laser disc collections, audiocassettes, audio compact -discs, slide collections, monographs, multimedia interaction CDs, new acquisitions and course-reserved materials. Media Center also provides the Video On Demand (VOD). The user can view the programs via campus network.

5.

Does Media Center provide TV or cable TV programs?

 

Media Center currently has 5 satellite channels, and the instructions are stated on the audio/visual viewing carrels.

6.

Does Media Center provide replicate service for the user?

 

The Media Center does not provide material replicate service due to the intellectual property rights, and user is prohibited to bring in personal device for replicating audio/visual material.

7.

Does user allow bringing personal audio/visual material to the Media Center?

 

Most of the audio/visual materials are recorded with copyright for personal use only, for it is not advised to play any personal audio/visual material in the media center or public place.

8.

How to reserve the group viewing room and auditorium?

 

There are different rules and regulations for reservation¡G

 
  • Lecturers or advisor can reserve the auditorium for using the Media Center's materials to supplement the course instruction. Moreover, the audience group has to be 10 to 70 people.
 
  • Group viewing rooms can be reserved for movie showing, and the audience group has to be 3 to 15 people. Group viewing rooms can be booked on spot or made a reservation.
 
  • Nowadays, both group viewing rooms and auditoriums have to be reserved at least one day ahead before using. Please contact 65792 for further information.

9.

What is VOD (Video On Demand)?

 

Video on Demand (VOD) is a Digital Audio/Visual System. The system can be plugged in with the internet browser through the campus network. Meanwhile, it allows multi-users to view the same programs at the same time.

10.

What are the PC requirements for viewing VOD programs?

 

The PC should be Pentium III or above, attached with 256MB RAM, Internet Explore 6.0 or above, sound card, speakers or earphones. The VOD functions in the Win98/Win2000/WinXP Chinese Operating System; unfortunately, it does not support the WinNT and Mac Operating System at this moment.

11.

Are special specifications needed for viewing the VOD programs?

 
  1. Users do not need to make any proxy setting to keep your connection IP within the NCKU campus IP range (140.116.*.*).
  2. For viewing Mpeg format programs, such as Discovery channel series, the users are asked to use the fixed IP in Internet connection.
  3. The user needs to download and install the software ¡¦vod_client.exe¡¦ at first, and then use the IE browser 6.0 or above to access to the VOD system.
  4. The department network security administrators have to open ports in Internet Connection Firewall to ensure that the programs work correctly. Call at ext. number 65755 to receive the information.

The local PC¡¦s firewall and anti-virus software probably cause the VOD programs to work incorrectly.

12.

Why can't the VOD programs be started?

 

The problem might be caused by various reasons. Please check the following.

  • Check that the IP address is within the service range, such as 140.116.*.*, and please do not use any proxy setting.
  • Make sure the vod_client.exe and media player are installed properly.
  • Some programs can only be displayed within the library due to the copyright licenses.
  • For viewing MPEG format programs, such as Discovery Channel, the users are asked to use the fixed IP in Internet connection.

If those settings are correct, but the VOD is still unworkable, then please check the networking bandwidth or connection ports with the connection provider.

13.

Why are user ID and password required for accessing to VOD system?

 

The VOD system requires user's ID and password for confirming use status and keeping usage statistic.

14.

What are the differences in VOD system between old version (v2.4) and new version (v2.6)?

 

The NCKU VOD system has been updated to version 2.6, this new version provides the following functions¡G

  • [What's New]¡G provide the newly uploaded programs by subjects.
  • [Top 10]¡G the users can check the hot programs over last month, 3 months and 12 months.
  • [Selected Titles]¡G the users can view the programs with special topics such as ¡¦Language learning¡¦ and ¡¥Explore Discovery¡¦, which are selected and defined by Media Center librarians.
  • [Course Reserve]¡G the users can choose the professor's appointed films here.
  • [NCKU Media Records]¡G users can view the audio/video programs about NCKU, including the state of the art of NCKU campus, academic activities and lectures.
  • [Title Search]¡G users can search the programs by cross-field keywords, title keywords, author keywords, subjects, series names, uploaded dates and any word in abstracts.
  • [My Favorite]¡G this function allows every user to add up to 20 favorite programs in their accounts. The login users can click ¡¥my favorite¡¦ icon on the left frame to play the favorite programs.

15.

Are VOD personal ID number and password as same as those in WebPAC renewing system? Are the users able to change the password?

 

Yes. For NCKU faculty, staff, and students, the ID number and password are as same as in WebPAC renewing system.
Users can change password at ¡¥Reader¡¦s password changing website¡¦ (Chinese only) or come to the circulation desk on 1F to change it.

16.

Can NCKU alumni and family dependants access to the VOD system?

 

Yes. For alumni, family dependants, NCKU library members, extension courses students, and walk-in users could login 'GUEST' to access VOD system on a fee-base at Media Center.

17.

Does VOD system provide English version?

 

Yes. The new VOD system has been an English version, please connect to http://vod.lib.ncku.edu.tw/nckuvod/en_version/ to login.

18.

I live in students¡¦ dorm on campus, can I access to the VOD system via campus network?

 

Yes. Everywhere you are in NCKU, you can access to the VOD system through the campus network. However, you have to keep your connection IP fixed within the 140.116.*.* range.

19.

Can NCKU students, staff, and faculty access to the VOD system out of campus?

 

Yes. All the NCKU students, staff, and faculty can access to the VOD system wherever they are. But only the ¡¥Global¡¦ range programs (such as NCKU Distance Learning) can be viewed out of campus.

20.

Does the VOD system provide the self-checking function to check user¡¦s PC requirements?

 

Yes. The VOD system provides ¡¥System Requirements Check¡¦ to help users know if their computer meets the system requirements. Moreover, the users can play the test files in different formats(MPEG¡BWMV¡BMP3) to make sure the system works correctly.

21.

Can I install any media viewing software, such as Power DVD, Real Player, to view the VOD programs?

 

NO. The users need to install the soft ware ¡¥VOD Client¡¥ to view programs.

22.

Can I download and save the programs from the VOD system?

 

NO. All the programs are protected under the copyrightregulations, it is prohibited to download, save, and reproduce from the VOD system.

23.

Why did the PC work incorrectly when I was closing the playing window?

 

You have to press the ¡¥stop¡¦ (¡½) at first, and then to close the window.

24.

Can I find the VOD system operation instructions?
